The effort of moving towards international convergence of accounting standards has risen since the end of World War II, resulting to the revolution of financial reporting. ââ¬Å"IFRS for example are accounting standards issued by the IASB, an independent organisation based in London, UKâ⬠(Ball, 2006). IASB is primarily established to promulgate IFRS and are responsible to set rules that can be equivalently implemented by public companies internationally. Uniform accounting standards are simply demanded in order to produce a comparable accounting information as many big companies begin to enlarge their territory beyond their home country. Therefore, many professionals believe that a transparent and understandable financial reporting could be produced by using uniform standards. However, the competency of uniform standards alone in producing uniform financial reporting is arguable due to significant factors. The existence of varieties in capitalism by individual countries have r estricted the ability of uniform standards in regulating local financial reporting. Plus, the distinction in institutional influences make it harder for uniform standards to work efficiently in various political conditions and to agree with different types of regional legal structures. Besides, cultures and religions also play an important role in accounting industry as they have the power to shape national economies. Therefore, regardless of many benefits that uniform standards could bring, there areShow MoreRelatedThe Convergence of Two Accounting Systems and the International Financial Reporting Standards1318 Words à |à 5 PagesI. The glorified act of war is often staged in historical literature by idolizing the soldiers who partake in the event. Soldiers are made to seem intrepid, ruthless and muscular, each with a ceaseless desire to fight valiantly for their countries. Timothy Findley and Kurt Vonnegut discard this typical hero archetype in their anti-war novels by portraying the soldiers who fight in the war as the men they are, not as the templates of heroes they are expected to fit, in furtherance of strengthening their anti-war stances. Findley and Vonnegut illustrate their protagonists as a tragic hero and an anti-hero, respectively, in order to juxtapose the atrocities of war with the flawed humanness of man and to challenge the stereotypical image of aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Guided by his undying love for his sister, Robertââ¬â¢s call to action is intrinsically motivated by an ironic catalyst that leads to his own eventual death; the desire to preserve life. At the climax of the novel, Robe rtââ¬â¢s courage tempers out his Achillesââ¬â¢ heel of introverted moral justness. His ascendance to the position of officer is only natural considering that his resilience and persistence strengthen significantly as he begins to imitate the hero archetype upheld by most war novels, though his concealed struggles with morality and obedience as exposed by his actions confirm him to be a tragic hero. Even with his elevated position, Robert demonstrates many instances of nurturing as he develops into a strong man weathered by the war, as opposed to the typical hardening experienced by most men on the front lines. The telltale quality of morality demonstrated only by a tragic hero is a tragic flaw in itself, as it forces acts that would otherwise be self-indulgent to take on an air of humility. ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ll ask you again,ââ¬â¢ he said, ââ¬Ëand I expect some politeness this time. Do you claim to be the king of the Jews?ââ¬â¢ Jesus said nothing. Pilate knocked him down, and said, ââ¬ËYou hear all these charges they lay against you? You think weââ¬â¢re going to put up with this kind of thing? You think weââ¬â¢re stupid, to allow agitators to go around causing trouble and urging the people to riot, or worse? Weââ¬â¢re responsible for keeping the peace here, if you hadnââ¬â¢t noticed. And I will not put up with political disturbance from any direction. Iââ¬â¢ll stamp that out at once, make no mistake. Well? What have you got to say, King Jesus?ââ¬â¢ Again Jesus said nothing, so Pilate told the guards to beat him. By this time they could hear the shouts of the crowd outside, and both the priests and the Romans feared a riot. ââ¬ËWhat are they shouting about?ââ¬â¢ demanded Pilate. ââ¬ËDo they want this man released?ââ¬â¢ Now there was a custom that at the time of Passover, one prisoner of the peopleââ¬â¢s choice would be given his freedom; and some of the priests, in order to agitate the crowd and make sure Jesus didnââ¬â¢t escape with his life, had gone among the people urging them to plead for the life of Barabbas. One of Pilateââ¬â¢s officers said, ââ¬ËNot this man, sir. They want you to free Barabbas.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËThat murderer? Why?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHe is popular, sir. You would please them greatly by letting him go.ââ¬â¢ Pilate went out on to his balcony and spoke to the crowd. ââ¬ËYou want Barabbas?ââ¬â¢ he said. They all cried, ââ¬ËYes! Barabbas!ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËVery well, he can go free. Now clear the courtyard. Go about your business. He came back into the room, and said, ââ¬ËThat means thereââ¬â¢s a spare cross. You hear that, Jesus?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËSir,ââ¬â¢ said Caiaphas, ââ¬Ëif it would be possible to consider, for example, a sentence of exile-ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËTake him away and crucify him,ââ¬â¢ said Pilate. ââ¬ËPut a sign on the cross saying who he claims to be ?C the king of the Jews. Thatââ¬â¢ll teach you people to think about rebellion and rioting.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËSir, could the sign read ââ¬Å"He says he is king of the Jews?â⬠Just in case, you know-ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve said what Iââ¬â¢ve said. Donââ¬â¢t push your luck, Caiaphas.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËNo, of course not, sir. Thank you, sir.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËTake him away then. Flog him first, and then nail him up.ââ¬â¢ The Crucifixion Christ, among the crowd, had wanted to shout ââ¬ËNo!ââ¬â¢ when Pilate asked if they wanted Barabbas freed, but he hadnââ¬â¢t dared; and he felt his failure to do so like yet another blow at his heart. There was not much time now. He searched up and down among the people, looking for the angel, but saw him nowhere, and finally, on seeing a stir by the gates of the governorââ¬â¢s mansion, followed the crowd to see the Roman guards take Jesus to the place of execution. He didnââ¬â¢t see any of the disciples among the crowd, but there were some women there whom he recognised. One of them was the wife of Zebedee, the mother of James and John, another was the woman from Magdala, of whom Jesus was particularly fond, and the third, to his great surprise, was his own mother. He hung back; he wanted nothing less, at that moment, than for her to see him. He watched from a little way off as they went with the crowd through the city to the place called Golgotha, where criminals were usually crucified. Two men were already hanging on crosses there, having been convicted of theft. The Roman soldiers knew their business; it was not long before Jesus was hanging in place beside them. Christ remained with the crowd until it began to thin, which it did before very long: once the victim was nailed to the cross there was not much to see until the soldiers broke his legs to hasten his death, which might not happen for many hours. The disciples had vanished altogether. Christ went in search of the man who was his informant, in order to find out what they intended to do next, but he found that the man had left the house where he was staying, and the host had no idea where he had gone. Of course, there was no sign of the angel, the stranger, and Christ couldnââ¬â¢t ask after him, because he still had no name to call him by. From time to time, and always reluctantly, he went back to the place of execution, but found no change there. The three women were sitting close by the crosses. Christ took great care not to be seen by any of them. Late in the afternoon, word got around that the Roman soldiers had decided to hasten the deaths of the three men. Christ hurried to the scene, sick and fearful, to find the crowd so thick he couldnââ¬â¢t see what was happening, but he heard the blows as the last manââ¬â¢s legs were smashed, and the satisfied sigh of the crowd, and a high gasping cry from the victim. Some women began to wail. Christ walked away very carefully, as lightly as he could, trying to make no impression on the earth. The Burial One of the members of the Sanhedrin was a man from the town of Arimathea, whose name was Joseph. Despite his membership of the council, he was not one of those whoââ¬â¢d condemned Jesus; on the contrary, he admired him and was greatly interested in what heââ¬â¢d had to say about the coming Kingdom. Knowing that the Passover was imminent, he went to Pilate and asked for the body. ââ¬ËWhy? Whatââ¬â¢s the hurry?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWe would like to bury Jesus decently before the sabbath, sir. Itââ¬â¢s our custom.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m surprised you bother. The man was nothing but a rabble-rouser. You read "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ Chapter 14" in category "Essay examples" I hope youââ¬â¢ve all learned a lesson. Take him, if you want him.ââ¬â¢ Joseph and a colleague from the Sanhedrin called Nicodemus, another sympathiser, took the body down from the cross with some help from the grieving women. They had it carried to a garden nearby, where Joseph had had a tomb made for himself. The tomb was formed like a cave, and the entrance was closed by a stone that rolled in a groove. Joseph and the others wrapped the body of Jesus in a linen cloth, with spices to keep it from corruption, and closed the tomb in time for the sabbath. There was still no sign of the disciples. The Stranger in the Garden Christ spent the next day alone in the room he had rented, alternately praying and weeping and trying to write down what had happened, or as much of it as he knew. He was afraid of more things than he could count. He didnââ¬â¢t feel like eating or drinking, and he couldnââ¬â¢t sleep. The money Caiaphas had given him troubled him more and more, until he thought he would go mad from shame, so he paid the landlord what he owed and gave the rest to the first beggar he saw in the street. Still he felt no better. When evening fell he went to the garden where Joseph had laid Jesus in the tomb, and sat near the grave among the shadows. Presently he became aware that the stranger was sitting next to him. ââ¬ËI have been busy elsewhere,ââ¬â¢ said the stranger. ââ¬ËYes,ââ¬â¢ said Christ bitterly, ââ¬Ëgoing to and fro in the earth, and walking up and down in it.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËI know this is hard for you. But I am not Satan. The first part of our work is nearly accomplished.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAnd where was the ram caught in the thicket? You let me believe that something would happen to prevent the worst. And nothing happened, and the worst came.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËYou let yourself believe it, and your belief let the great oblation run its course. Thanks to what you did, all kinds of good will come.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËSo he will rise from the dead?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËUndoubtedly.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhen?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAlways.ââ¬â¢ Christ shook his head in irritated bewilderment. ââ¬ËAlways?ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬ËWhat does that mean?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËIt means that the miracle will never be forgotten, its goodness will never be exhausted, its truth will last from generation to generation.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAh, truth again. Would that be the truth that is different from history?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËThe truth that irradiates history, in your own beautiful phrase. The truth that waters history as a gardener waters his plants. The truth that lights history as a lantern banishes the shadows.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËI donââ¬â¢t think Jesus would have recognised that sort of truth.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhich is precisely why we need you to embody it. You are the missing part of Jesus. Without you, his death will be no more than one among thousands of other public executions. But with you, the way is opened for that light of truth to strike in on the darkness of history; the blessed rain will fall on the parched earth. Jesus and Christ together will be the miracle. So many holy things will flower from this!ââ¬â¢ They were speaking very quietly, and the garden itself was quiet. But then Christ heard a low rumble, as of stone rolling on stone. ââ¬ËWhatââ¬â¢s happening?ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬ËThe next part of the miracle. Be calm, dear Christ. All shall be well. Jesus wanted a state of things that no human being could have borne for long. People are capable of great things, but only when great circumstances call on them. They canââ¬â¢t live at that pitch all the time, and most circumstances are not great. In daily life people are tempted by comfort and peace; they are a little lazy, a little greedy, a little cowardly, a little lustful, a little vain, a little irritable, a little envious. They are not good for much, but we have to deal with them as they are. Among other things, theyââ¬â¢re credulous; so they like mysteries, and they adore miracles. But you know this well; you said this to Jesus some time ago. As usual, you were right, and as usual, he didnââ¬â¢t listen.ââ¬â¢ By the tomb, some figures were moving. It was a cloudy night, and the moon, which was just past the full, was hidden; but there was enough light to see three or four figures carrying something heavy between them away from the tomb. ââ¬ËWhat are they doing?ââ¬â¢ said Christ. ââ¬ËThe work of God.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËThat is Jesusââ¬â¢s body!ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhatever you see, it is necessary.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAre you going to pretend he is risen?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHe will be risen.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHow? By means of a trick? This is contemptible. Oh, that I fell for this! Oh, I am damned! Oh, my brother! What have I done?ââ¬â¢ And he fell down and wept. The stranger laid his hands on Christââ¬â¢s head. ââ¬ËWeep,ââ¬â¢ he said, ââ¬Ëand comfort will come to you.ââ¬â¢ Christ remained where he was, and the stranger continued: ââ¬ËNow I must tell you about the Holy Spirit. He is the one who will fill the disciples, and in time to come more and more of the faithful, with the conviction of the living Jesus. Jesus could not be with people for ever, but the Holy Spirit can, and will. It was necessary for Jesus to die so that the Spirit could descend to this world, and descend he will, with your help. In the days to come you will see the transforming power of the Spirit. The disciples, those weak and troubled men, will become like lions. What the living Jesus could not do, the dead and risen Jesus will bring about by the power of the Holy Spirit, not only in the disciples but in everyone who hears and believes.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËThen why do you need me? If the Spirit is so all-powerful, what help can I possibly give?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËThe Spirit is inward and invisible. Men and women need a sign that is outward and visible, and then they will believe. You have been scornful lately when I have spoken of truth, dear Christ; you should not be. It will be truth that strikes into their minds and hearts in the ages to come, the truth of God, that comes from beyond time. But it needs a window to be opened so it can shine through into the world of time, and you are that window.ââ¬â¢ Christ gathered himself and got to his feet, and said, ââ¬ËI understand. I shall play my part. But I do so with a bitter conscience and a heavy heart.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËOf course. Itââ¬â¢s natural. But you have a great part to play still; when the records of this time and of Jesusââ¬â¢s life are written, your account will be of enormous value. You will be able to determine how these events are remembered right up until the ending of the world. You will-ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËStop, stop. Enough. I want to hear no more for now. I am very tired and unhappy. I shall come back here on the morning after the sabbath, and do whatever I have to do.ââ¬â¢ How to cite The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ Chapter 14, Essay examples

Introduction The following report examines the case of Mr. Davis and the implementation of new business development policies at Hereford Bank. This paper identifies the main problems facing Jim Davis, analyzes key issues and people, and concludes with a recommendation and implementation plan for resolving the identified issues.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Who is in Charge? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More When examining the case, it becomes immediately apparent that the main issue comes in the form of a lack of sufficient management initiative from Mr. Jones and a degree of resistance to change towards the proposed policies by Ms. Matthews. The problem and recommendation are based on the following detailed analysis. Analysis The first identified issue in the case comes in the form of Patty Matthews. The problem with Ms. Matthews is that she has shown a propensity for uncooperative behavior regarding the proposed policy changes. As explained by Jones, with the exception of Ted Yurek, the other branch managers under his employ have gotten by with a high school education and the only thing they have going for them is their extensive experience as branch managers. They simply lack the sufficient sales skills and it is likely that there will be a considerable resistance to the proposed changes that Davis will be implementing. Whetten and Cameron tackle the issue of employee resistance to change wherein they state that changing the employee culture and implementing proper transition practices is the most effective means of reducing such resistance and ensuring a proper changeover to the new method of operation (Whetten and Cameron, 2011). In the case of Ms. Matthews, an active resistance to change is present (i.e. she called in sick for the training). It would be necessary to immediately resolve this issue due to the seniority Ms. Matthews has, which translates into a considerable level of influence over the other bank managers. If Ms. Matthews continues to resist the changes actively, it is likely that the other managers will resist as well as leading to a failure in proper policy implementation for new business development. If all attempts to get her to cooperate fail, and nothing will get her to budge or to display any form of cooperative behavior, it is better that she be terminated for the sake of the bank. It will be difficult to implement the necessary policy changes if she continues to get in the way and her refusal to cooperate would most likely lead to operational losses rather than gains.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Another of the identified issues was the lack of sufficient backbone in the case of Allen Jones when it came to dealing with the branch managers under his care. When going through the case data, the lack of Allenââ¬â¢s suf ficient willingness to keep the branch managers in line can be traced to his relatively short period within the bank (3 years) and the fact the branch managers have been in their respective positions for decades (Patty has been a branch manager for 25 years). By examining the section on Power and Influence by Whetten and Cameron, one relevant statement becomes immediately applicable to the current case: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ambitious, unseasoned twenty-somethingââ¬â¢s flooding the managerial job market. These new managers are taking positions traditionally reserved for battle-tested pros who understand from experience the ins and outs of gaining power and influenceâ⬠(Whetten and Cameron, 2011). This is exactly what is happening in the case of Jones, wherein his lack of experience in properly gaining power and influence has resulted in a lack of sufficient control over the bank managers. Given enough time he could develop such traits, however, with the need to implement new business development policies, Davis simply does not have the time to wait for Jones to develop the necessary backbone to get the branch managers to cooperate with the needed changes immediately. What you have to take into consideration is the likelihood of more operational developments that require greater cooperation from the bank managers and better levels of coordination on the part of Jones. As Davis develops new policies, operational guidelines, and programs for business development, it would be necessary for Jones to get the branch managers to cooperate. While this could be achieved by threatening to terminate uncooperative branch managers, Whetten and Cameron explain in the section on motivation that fear does not result in a good business environment for employees. Instead, one plausible solution would be for Jones to appear as an intermediary between upper management and the branch managers.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Who is in Charge? spec ifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The last issue, in this case, revolves around how Davis will attempt to address the issue of disciplining Patty Mathews. As stated in the concluding section, Mr. Davis believes that Ms. Matthews calling in sick on the day of training seems far too convenient and necessitates some form of disciplinary action. However, as the business development manager and the retirement account coordinator, he is not directly in a position of authority over Ms. Matthews and to attempt disciplinary behavior when she is not under his chain of authority could cause issues in the future. Asking Allen Jones to implement some method of disciplinary measures would normally be the case since they work together and it is the responsibility of Mr. Jones to ensure that the new operational guidelines for sales developed by Mr. Davis are properly implemented by the bank managers. However, as explained earlier in this case analysis, Mr . Jones lacks sufficient experience in exerting his authority and is hesitant in reprimanding or controlling the branch managers that he is in charge of. If Mr. Davis were to ask Mr. Jones to implement some form of disciplinary measure, it is unlikely that it would be implemented in a satisfactory manner and would lead to even more breaches of conduct in the future. The only solution at this point would be to escalate the issue to someone above Mr. Jones so as to ensure proper disciplinary action can be implemented. In this scenario, Mr. Davis has three options to choose from. He could choose to escalate the issue to his boss, Eric Johnson who is the VP of Marketing. He also potentially escalate the issue to the president of the bank, Ray McIntosh, who would have the authority to immediately implement some form of strict disciplinary measure given that it is the future success of the bank at stake. Lastly, he could communicate with Tim Hall, the VP of Operations, who is the boss of Allen Jones and in turn Patty Matthews. While each potential point of escalation does come with its own advantages, there are several issues that need to be taken into consideration. First off, in the case of Eric Johnson, who is the boss of Mr. Jones, the fact is that he is the VP of marketing and, as such, has no direct authority over Ms. Matthews.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Secondly, escalating the issue to Ray McIntosh, the president of the bank, may be far to overreaching given the fact that the problem with Ms. Matthews is not a major operational issue. Lastly, in the case of Tim Hall, it is uncertain whether he would listen to another person from a completely different department. Recommendation One possible solution utilizing the principles on developing proper power and influence over individuals by Whetten and Cameron would be to enhance the means by which Jones is viewed by the branch managers he is in charge of. This can be accomplished through a strongly worded letter from Till Hall (Vice President of Operations) to Patty Matthews if she continues to display uncooperative behavior regarding the business development training sessions and new policies that are being enacted. For example, if Ms. Matthews continues to resist conforming to the new policies that were developed by Davis, she would receive a stern letter from Tim Hall regarding her b ehavior and possible termination as a direct result. After the letter has been received and Ms. Matthews has expressed sufficient concern, Jones can state that he interceded on her behalf with Mr. Hall and that she will not be terminated from the bank so long as she attends remedial training sessions in order to get the needed sales training. All of these actions will have been orchestrated between Davis and Hall with no real intent to terminate Ms. Matthews, rather, the purpose of the letter would be to enhance the position of Jones in the eyes of branch managers as an effective intermediary between them and upper management. By doing so, this increases the power and influence he has over them, resulting in better long term relations. Reference List Whetten, D., Cameron, K. (2011). Developing management skills. Until Whenever Do Us Part essays Websters Dictionary says that marriage is the act of marrying, or the state of being married; legal union of a man and a woman for life, as husband and wife; wedlock; matrimony. It also says that divorce is to dissolve the marriage contract of, either wholly or partially; to separate by divorce. Yet theres no way that either definition can even begin to describe the magnitude of either arrangement. They cant describe the commitment that a marriage entails. They cant describe the pain that divorce can cause. They cant show the level of compatibility that marriage requires. And they cant show the causes of divorce. But Im hoping that this paper can. My goal in writing this is to show that marriage is taken too lightly and yet is something that society shoves down our throats as something we are required to do before death. I will attempt to show the causes of divorce and how we can avoid them by abstaining from marriage in the first place. It is my hope that despite the extre meness of my argument, I will be able to put marriage into perspective and show that the risk of divorce outweighs the benefits of marriage. According to the US Census Bureau, in 1998 2.2 million American couples were married and 1.1 million American couples divorced. Also, 60% of all divorces occur in people between the ages of 25 to 39. Then why is it that people get divorced? On the whole, I think it is because young people dont understand the gravity of marriage. And when theyve entered it and experienced it, they find that its not for them or much more commonly they blame it on the person that they were married to. Financial Ratios Used in the Financial Statements and Policies - Coursework Example The financial statement prepared with the help of financial ratios is an aid to find out the efficient operation of the business for the share holders, competitors, and outsiders who are willing to invest in the firm. These ratios play a key role in calculating the dividend to shareholders, interest to debenture holders, as well as the tax payable to the government. They also express the risk factor and bankruptcy chances of the firm. There have been no convincing theories on financial ratios over the years. Horrigan (1965), writes on how the financial ratios were originated and how the theories were not. He says that a unique outcome of the accounting evolution in the United States was the development of financial ratios which helped in analyzing accounting statements. Such ratios were originally formulated for using short-term credit analytical devices. The origin of such ratios can be traced out as far back as the late 19th century. A number of various financial ratios were developed by the analysts in the early decades of the century. The next step after the formulation of such ratios was the development of the body of empirical generalization about such financial ratios which later turn out to be the hypothesis for drawing out a theory of financial ratio analysis. However, the materialization of a system of empirical generalization never happened, much less a theory (Horrigan, 1965). There are a number of sources for the collection of information for financial ratio analysis. The Profit and Loss Account and the Balance Sheet serves as the main source for information.
